Questions about Invisalign®

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an innovative breakthrough in orthodontics. Using a series of clear plastic aligners, Invisalign® works to straighten teeth and provide a beautiful smile.

How Does Invisalign® Work?

The process for Invisalign® starts with a computer image of your mouth taken by your cosmetic dentist. From this image, a series of aligners are customized to correct your exact concerns. Over approximately the next twelve months, you will change aligners every two weeks, to progressively straighten your teeth. These aligners gently push your teeth into place, gradually giving you the smile you have always dreamed of.

What issues can Invisalign® fix?

Invisalign® can correct mild orthodontic issues including, crossbite, overbite, underbite, overly crowded teeth, and widely spaced teeth. Invisalign® has been proven effective in correcting these issues when the problem is not extreme. For patients with moderate to severe orthodontic issues, traditional braces may be a better option.

When do I wear my Invisalign® retainers?

Invisalign® aligners work best if they are worn at all times, day and night, for the full period of treatment. Exceptions to this rule include when you are eating and when you are cleaning your teeth. Because they are removable, Invisalign® makes these everyday tasks much easier than they are with traditional braces. However, it is important to keep your Invisalign® aligners in at all other times to ensure your teeth are straightened within the time frame provided for treatment.

Does Invisalign® hurt?

You will need to change aligners every two weeks. Each time you change your aligner, your teeth are shifted a little bit more. The process of shifting your teeth can cause some mild discomfort. This can easily be controlled with the use of over-the-counter pain relievers.

Is Invisalign® acceptable for adults?

Invisalign® is virtually undetectable while in place. As such, it is a very popular choice for adults who require orthodontic treatment. Because your aligners are removable, you can take them out for important business meetings or intimate encounters, further making them an ideal choice for adults.

Are the results from Invisalign® permanent?

Once your smile has been corrected with Invisalign®, you will need to wear a nighttime retainer to keep your teeth in place. Your teeth will gradually move back into their original position if this retainer is not worn. This is no different than any sort of orthodontic treatment.
